    Old-Fashioned Oatmeal

    Source of Recipe

From "Hand Made" by Melissa K. Norris

    Recipe Introduction

"My father likes his food like he likes his life — simple. One thing I've always been a bit astounded by is his breakfast. Every morning since I can remember and up until today, he has a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. If my mom fixes pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy, eggs, and bacon, it doesn't matter — he still has a small bowl of oatmeal with it. If she doesn't fix anything else, he still makes his pot of oatmeal. And he's quite content and happy with just his pot of oatmeal. I prefer a little more variety in my breakfast. While I'd like to think I'd be happy with oatmeal every morning, I'd probably complain a bit after the first week."

    List of Ingredients

    â—¦ 1 cup water
â—¦ ½ cup rolled or steel cut oats
    â—¦ Pinch of salt
    â—¦ 2 tablespoons butter
    â—¦ 2 teaspoons brown sugar
â—¦ Dash of cream or milk
â—¦ ½ banana, sliced, or ¼ cup berries (optional)
â—¦ ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

    Recipe

Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan.

Stir in oats and a pinch of salt. Place a lid on the saucepan, reduce the heat to low, and allow to cook for 7 to 8 minutes. Remove lid and take off heat.

Stir in butter, brown sugar, and a dash of cream or milk until combined. Add fruit, if desired.

    Makes 1 to 2 servings
