Holiday occasions are all the merrier with a sweet cup of Hot Glow Wine. It's the perfect way to warm up around the fire after an evening of caroling.
Gluhwein is a traditional hot beverage served in homes and sold on street corners during Christmas shopping season in the Bavarian state of Germany (where my husband was born). My mother-in-law shared her recipe with me more than 40 years ago. I serve this punch at Christmas time and other winter holidays. The orange and lemon slices and cinnamon sticks give the punch a sweet, fruity taste. The rum gives it an extra glow.
3 quarts water
6 tea bags (black tea)
1 lemon, cut into wedges
2 oranges, thinly sliced
1/2 cup sugar, plus more to taste
1/2 gallon red wine
1 pint dark rum (optional)
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
Recipe
1. Bring the water to a boil in a large nonreactive pot. Add tea bags. Turn off the heat and cover the pot. Steep tea for 5 minutes.
2. Remove tea bags. Add lemon, oranges, sugar, wine, rum (if using), cinnamon, and cloves. Simmer on low, uncovered, for about 10 minutes. Remove cloves and cinnamon sticks. Taste and add more sugar if desired. Serve warm.
TIP: It's wonderful to enjoy Hot Glow Wine outdoors, but if you're thinking about using a thermos to keep your beverage warm, make sure the one you select is nonreactive as well.
