    Chocolate Butter Toffee Bars

    Source of Recipe

From the Jan. 2, 2008 editions of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Posted: Jan. 1, 2008

    Recipe Introduction

The Journal Sentinel holiday baking contest we wrote about last week had a counterpart at the company’s printing plant in West Milwaukee. Jackie Kukowski took third place with this bar recipe.

    List of Ingredients

1 cup packed light brown sugar (packed)
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
    1 egg yolk
    2 cups flour
    1/2 to 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    1/2 cup Heath toffee bits

    Recipe

Preheat oven to 325°F. In bowl, mix sugar and butter on medium speed until creamy. Add egg yolk and beat until well mixed. Reduce speed to low and add flour. Beat until well-mixed. Press mixture evenly onto ungreased 15½-by-10½-inch jellyroll pan. Dough is sticky, so it’s easier to just use your hands for this part instead of a spatula. Bake in preheated oven 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Bars will be soft. Sprinkle immediately with the chocolate chips. Give them a minute or two to melt, then spread the chocolate. Sprinkle with the toffee bits. Let cool about an hour before cutting diagonally into bars. Makes 4 dozen bars.
