Recipe Introduction
In the “Food that Makes you go Huh?” thread I mentioned Garlic Chocolate Chip Cookies and someone requested that I post the recipe here. A variation of this recipe appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press several years ago but they listed no source.
List of Ingredients
10-12 cloves garlic
Boiling water
1/4 maple syrup
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp. real vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 cup (or one bag) chocolate chipsRecipe
To prepare garlic:
Drop garlic cloves in boiling water for 5 minutes or until tender. Peel and chop. Soak in maple syrup for 30 minutes.
To make cookies:
In mixing bowl, cream butter sugars, eggs and vanilla, until light and fluffy. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Stir into chocolate chips. Stir in garlic and syrup.
To bake cookies:
Drop batter by table spoons onto un greased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Bake in 375 degree oven for 8 – 10 minutes or until lightly browned but still slightly soft. Remove from oven and cool on racks.
This cookie sneaks up on you. Most people are unable to identify the “unique” ingredient until after they have eaten the whole cookie. By then gooey bits of garlic are stuck to your teeth as a wonderful reminder. People are never ambivalent about this cookie. They either love it or hate it. I happen to LOVE them.
Enjoy, let me know what you think.
