    COFFEECAKE BATTER:
    1 1/2 c. sifted flour
    1/2 c. sugar
    2 t. baking powder
    1/2 t. salt
    1/4 c. shortening
    1 egg
    1/2 c. milk

    SPICY NUTS:
    1/2 c. brown sugar
    1/2 c. chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
    2 T. flour
    2 t. cinnamon
    2 T. butter, melted

    Recipe



    Combine ingredients for spicy nuts. Set aside.
    Sift together dry ingredients; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Blend egg and milk; add all at once to flour mixture; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. Alternate layers of batter and spicy nuts in greased muffin pan (ending with layer of batter), filling 2/3 full. Bake at 375°F about 20 minutes. Makes 12 muffins.
