    Recipe Introduction

Nana started making these for Ryan when he was in third grade in Washington State. She'd make them for him to take to his school Halloween parties.

    List of Ingredients

    • 3/4 C. superfine sugar
    • 1/2 C. butter, softened
    • 1/2 C. Crisco
    • 1 tsp. pure vanilla
    • 2 1/4 C. unbleached all purpose flour
    • 1/4 C. cocoa
    • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    • miniature chocolate chips
    • black or chocolate string licorice

    Instructions

    1. In large bowl beat sugar, butter and shortening until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and egg. Blend well.
    2. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup, level off. Stir in flour, cocoa and baking powder, mix well.
    3. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. To form mouse, pinch one end of ball to form nose. For ears, make two tiny balls of dough and flatten slightly; gently press into dough on upper front of each mouse body. For eyes, press 2 miniature chocolate chips into dough below ears. Place shaped cookies 2 inches apart on un-greased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 13 minutes or until set.

    4. Cut licorice strings into 2 inch pieces. Upon removal from the oven immediately place a piece of licorice into rounded end of each cookie. Remove from cookie sheet to cool.
