    Bertie's Poorman's Cake

    Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
    1 pound raisins
    2 cups water
    1/2 cup Crisco shortening
    1/2 cup water
    2 cups sugar
    1 Dash salt
    4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 tablespoon baking soda
    3 tablespoons cinnamon
    1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
    1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1 teaspoon ground cloves

    Simmer raisins for 15 minutes; add shortening and water. Cool for 10 minutes.
    Combine remaining ingredients and mix well. (The batter will start to swell). Pour into a greased 9x13-inch pan and bake at 350 F. for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Top with your favorite topping or Cool Whip on each piece.
