Aunt Ruth's Date Pinwheel Cookies

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup light brown sugar
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
pinch salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
7 1/4 ounces pitted dates
1 cup nuts -- chopped
1 egg
Cream butter and sugars well; add egg and vanilla and beat until light. Add sifted dry ingredients and mix well. Chill until firm enough to roll.
Filling: Cut the dates into small pieces; bring to boil with 1/4 cup sugar, dash of salt; add 1/4 cup water and simmer 5 minutes. Stir often; remove from heat and add chopped nuts. Cool.
Halve dough; roll each half on floured cloth or wax paper, into a 9x12" rectangle. Spread with filling (like a jelly roll) and roll up tightly like from end. Wrap in wax paper; chill overnight. Slice 1/8-inch thick. Place on cookie sheets and bake at 375 F. for 10 minutes.
