    Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
    1 1/2 cups brown sugar
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
    1/2 cup shortening
    3 eggs
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon cream of tartar
    4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour -- sifted
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1/2 cup nuts -- chopped

    Mix in order given. Divide dough in half and make two long rolls. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate until chilled; slice and bake at 375 F. until done, about 10 to 12 minutes.
