Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening -- see note*
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour -- sifted
1/2 cup nuts -- chopped
12 ounces chocolate chips
Cream shortening and sugar until smooth. Beat eggs and add soda (which has been dissolved in 1 tbsp. warm water). Sift flour and salt together and add to the creamed mixture. Add vanilla and fold in nuts and chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoonful onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 F. for 8 to 10 minutes or lightly browned around edges and puffy.

NOTES : If you like soft, cake-like cookies.....then you'll enjoy this one. I used half shortening and half butter where it calls for shortening.
