Basic Buttermilk Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk Recipe
Sift together dry ingredients; place in a bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk; stir just until the dough clings together. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently, about 10-12 strokes. Roll to 1/2-in. thickness; cut with a 2-in. round biscuit cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes about 1-1/2 dozen.
