    Jernigan's Famous Biscuits

    List of Ingredients

    2 packages Dry yeast
    1/4 cup Warm water
    2 cups Buttermilk
    5 1/2 cups All purpose flour
    1/3 cup Sugar
    1 tablespoon Baking powder
    1 teaspoon Soda
    1 1/4 teaspoons Salt
    1 cup Shortening

    Recipe

    Combine yeast, water and about 1 tablespoon of sugar; let stand 5 minutes or until bubbly. Add buttermilk and set aside. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl; cut in shortening till it resembles coarse meal. Add buttermilk mixture, a little at a time, mixing with a fork until thoroughly moistened, and biscuit dough consistency. Turn dough out on a floured surface and knead lightly 3 or 4 times. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with a 2 3/4 inch biscuit cutter and place on lightly greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise one hour. Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes.
