Almond: Norwegian Almond Muffins

MUFFINS:
2 cups bread flour
1 package red star active dry yeast or red star quick-rlse yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 cup water -- at 80ºF
1/4 cup milk -- at 80ºF
1 egg -- at room temperature
1/4 cup cool butter -- cut into pieces
TOPPING
2 tablespoons cherry preserves
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1 tablespoon sugar
Recipe
Place muffin ingredients into the pan in the order specified by the bread machine owner's manual (all sizes, all models). Select the "MANUAL" or "DOUGH" setting on machine. After the machine has completed the cycle, remove the dough. Divide into 12 portions; place in well-greased muffin pan cups. Cover; let rise in warm place until almost double in size.
Before baking, make an indentation in the top of each muffin; spoon about 1/2 teaspoon cherry preserves into each. Combine almonds and sugar; sprinkle over muffins. Bake at 350ºF for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Cool in pans 3 minutes; remove from pans. Serve warm or cool. Makes 12 muffins.
