    Coffeecake: Buttermilk Spice Coffee Cake

    List of Ingredients

    1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
    1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
    1/2 cup butter -- melted
    1 beaten egg
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla

    BROWN SUGAR GLAZE:
    1/4 cup packed brown sugar
    2 tablespoons butter
    2 tablespoons honey
    2 tablespoons milk

    Recipe

    Grease a 9x9x2-inch baking pan; set aside. In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugars, baking powder, soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice; set aside. In another bowl combine buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Add to flour mixture, stirring until smooth. Pour barter into prepared pan. Bake in a 350ºF oven about 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Pour glaze evenly over cake. Bake 5 minutes more. Cool in pan on wire rack. Makes 12 servings.

    Brown Sugar Glaze: In a small saucepan, combine 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons honey and 2 tablespoons milk. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer glaze, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/4 cup chopped walnuts. Use as directed above.
