Donuts: Doughnut Wonder Balls

2 tablespoons Shortening
1/2 cup Sugar
4 slices Bread crusts removed
1 Egg beaten
2/3 cup Milk
1 3/4 cups Flour all-purpose
2 teaspoons Baking powder
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg ground
Oil Recipe
Cream shortening and sugar. Cut bread into cubes, and combine with egg and milk; add to creamed mixture, blending well. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Chill dough 1 hour. Remove one-fourth of dough at a time from refrigerator; roll about 1/2" thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with a 1-1/2" cutter and fry in hot oil at 365¼F. Drain on absorbent paper.
