Bread-Sweet: Black Walnut Date Bread

3/4 cup black walnuts,finely chopped
1 cup dates, pitted and sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup boiling water
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour, sifted Recipe
Combine nuts, dates, soda and salt in a bowl. Add shortening and boiling water and let stand 15 minutes. Stir eggs slightly and add vanilla. Sift sugar and flour into egg mixture. Stir until dry ingredients are moistened. This is a very stiff batter. Add to the date mixture and stir until well blended. Grease two small loaf pans. Pour batter into pans. Cover with foil. Bake at 350ºF for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10 minutes longer or until test comes out clear. Cool 15 minutes in pans, then remove from pans. Wrap well and refrigerate a day or two before slicing.
