Desserts-Cake: Grandmother's Gingerbread

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1-1/2 teaspoons soda
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon lemon extract
Recipe
Cream shortening and sugar with beaten egg and molasses. Add dry ingredients which have been sifted together. Add hot water and lemon extract. Beat until smooth. Spread in greased 9 x 13 x 2-inch cake pan.
Add topping of 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake at 40 to 45 in 350-degree oven.
To serve: Warm sweetened applesauce. Put about two tablespoons on top of cake pieces and top with real whipped cream.
