    Bread-Sweet: Farmhouse Buttermilk Date Nut Bread

    List of Ingredients

    1/2 cup sugar
    1/4 cup butter, softened
    1 egg
    1/2 cup buttermilk
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
    1 cup flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 cup chopped dates
    1/2 cup chopped walnuts
    1 tablespoon grated orange peel

    CREAMY ORANGE GLAZE:
    1 tablespoon cream
    1/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
    2 teaspoons grated orange peel
    2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts

    Recipe

    Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease two 6x3 inch foil loaf pans. Beat together sugar, butter, egg, buttermilk and vanilla until mixture is blended. Add flour, baking soda and baking powder and beat until blended - do not overbeat. Stir in the dates, walnuts and orange peel. Divide batter between the prepared pans.

    Place pans on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350ºF oven for 35-40 minutes or until cake tester, inserted in center, comes out clean. Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes, and then remove loaves from pan and continue cooling on a rack. Brush tops lightly with glaze (for glaze, stir together all ingredients until blended). Yields 2 loaves. Freezes well; wrap in double thickness of plastic wrap and then foil. Remove wrappers while defrosting.
