    Desserts: Very Controversial Apple Crisp

    List of Ingredients

    4 generous cup tart apples, peeled, cored and sliced
    1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1 tsp. sugar, mixed
    1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
    3/4 cup flour
    1/2 cup unsalted butter
    1/8 teaspoon salt
    vanilla ice cream, if serving warm

    Recipe

    Preheat the oven to 375¼F, with a rack in the middle. Butter a 9x5 inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the lemon juice and cinnamon sugar (can also grate in a little fresh nutmeg if desired). In a small bowl, blend the brown sugar, flour, butter and salt together - first with a pastry blender or 2 knives, and then with your hands. Put the apple slices in the loaf pan, then press the topping over them. Bake the apple crisp for 1 hour. The topping will become candylike. Serve the apple crisp warm with ice cream, or cold. Also very good when it's chilled for a couple of days. Serves 4-6.
