Seafood Chowder: Oven Clam Chowder

2 dozen clams with their juice
2 medium-sized onions
1/2 pound salt pork
3 large potatoes
3 handfuls cracker crumbs
1/2 teaspoon thyme
Black pepper and salt

Chop clams, not too fine; chop onions very fine. Cut pork and potatoes into small dice. Put in a baking dish a layer of pork, one of potatoes, one of clams and so on. Add some of the cracker crumbs, thyme, and pepper and salt to taste. Cover these ingredients with clam liquor and milk until liquid rises 1 inch above the chowder. Sprinkle with cracker crumbs. Bake in a moderate over until liquid has almost disappeared.
