    2 large eggs, lightly beaten, divided
    1/2 cup buttermilk
    1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    2 cups flour
    1/3 cup sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/3 cup unsalted butter, chilled
    cut into 1/2" chunks
    6 ounces milk or bittersweet chocolate
    cut into 1/2" chunks
    1/3 cup coarsely broken walnuts

    Preheat oven to 400ºF. Lightly butter a baking dish. Reserve 1 tbl. of egg for brushing on top of scones. In a medium bowl, stir together buttermilk, remaining eggs, and vanilla. In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Distribute butter chunks over flour mixture. With fingertips, quickly rub butter into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir buttermilk mixture into flour mixture until combined. Stir in chocolate chunks and walnuts.

    Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until combined, about 30 - 60 seconds. With lightly floured hands, pat dough into a 9" diameter circle on prepared baking sheet. Brush reserved egg over top and side of dough. With serrated knife cut into 8 wedges. Bake for 14-17 minutes, or until lightly browned and a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Remove bakingm sheet to wire rack and cool 5 minutes. Using metal spatula, transfer scones to wire rack and cool for 10 minutes. Recut into wedges if needed. Best served warm. Makes 8.
