    List of Ingredients

    1 ½ cups wholemeal flour
    1 cup plain flour
    3 tspns baking powder
    ½ tspn cinnamon
    ½ tspn nutmeg
    ½ tspn ginger powder
    3 tblspns unsalted butter
    ½ cup chopped dates
    ¼ cup chopped dried apricots
    3 tblspn honey
½ cup low-fat milk, plus 2 tbspns low-fat milk (for browning)
    1 egg, beaten

    Recipe

Preheat oven to 200ºC. Grease an oven tray. Sift wholemeal flour, plain flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger into a large bowl. Add bits from sifter to flour mixture. Rub in butter with fingertips until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add dates and apricots.

In a small bowl, beat honey, ½ cup milk and egg together. Mix egg mixture into flour mixture to form a stiff dough.

Turn dough out on to a lightly floured board and knead lightly. Roll out to about 2cm thickness. Cut rounds with a floured scone cutter. Place rounds on to a prepared tray and brush tops with extra milk. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm and with butter.
