    Apple: Apple-Almond Bars

    List of Ingredients

    2 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup butter
    1/2 cup sliced almonds
    2 egg yolks -- slightly beaten
    3/4 cup sugar
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    4 medium cooking apples -- peeled, cored, and
    sliced (4 cups)
    such as golden delicious, rome, granny smith, or jonathan
    icing

    Recipe

    In a large bowl, stir together the 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until pieces arc the size of small peas. Stir in the almonds and egg yolks with a fork. Press half of the mixture (about 2 cups) into the bottom of an ungreased 13x9x2-inch baking pan; set aside.

    In another large bowl, stir together the 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon. and nutmeg. Add apples and toss to coat. Arrange evenly over mixture in pan. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture evenly over apple mixture. Bake in a 350ºF oven about 35 minutes or until copping is golden. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Drizzle with icing. Let stand until set. Cut into bars. Makes 24. Icing: In a small bowl, stir together 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1 Tbsp. milk, and 1/4 tsp. almond extract until smooth.
