    2/3 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup butter or margarine -- softened
    1 teaspoon maple extract
    or vanilla
    4 eggs
    1 1/2 cups gold medal all-purpose flour
    2/3 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup maple-flavored syrup
    or corn syrup
    1 teaspoon maple extract
    1 cup pecan halves

    Heat oven to 350ºF. Beat granulated sugar, butter, 1 teaspoon maple extract and 1 of the eggs in large bowl with spoon. Stir in flour. Press dough in bottom and 1/2 inch up sides of ungreased rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches, using floured fingers if necessary. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until edges are light brown. Beat brown sugar, maple syrup, 1 teaspoon maple extract and remaining 3 eggs with fork or wire whisk in medium bowl. Stir in pecans. Pour over crust. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until set. Loosen edges from sides of pan while warm. Cool completely. For bars, cut into 8 rows by 4 rows. Store covered in refrigerator. MAKES 32 BARS
