Devil's Food: Aunt Rose's Devil's Food Cake

2 cups sugar
3/4 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups boiling hot water
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Delicious fudge frosting (see below)
Recipe
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place sugar and shortening in large bowl. Pour boiling hot water over sugar and shortening and mix with pastry blender until shortening is melted.
Place flour in sifter, add cocoa, salt and baking soda. Sift into sugar mixture in three portions, stirring well after each addition. Add eggs, mix well, then add vanilla. Batter will be very thin.
Pour into greased 13-by-9-inch pan and bake in preheated oven 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done.

Delicious Fudge Frosting
2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons margarine or butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix sugar and cocoa in bowl. In small pan or microwave, heat milk and butter together. Add to sugar mixture. Mix until smooth. Add flavoring. If frosting is too stiff, add more milk, if too thin, add more powdered sugar.
