    Red Velvet: Blue Ribbon Red Velvet Cake

    1/2 cup shortening
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    2 eggs
    2 ounces red food coloring
    2 teaspoons cocoa
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 1/2 cups cake flour
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon vinegar

    FROSTING:
    3 tablespoons flour
    1 cup milk
    1 cup powdered sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1 cup butter

    Recipe

    CAKE; cream shortening, sugar, then eggs and mix well. Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring; add to mixture. Add salt to flour, then add alternately with buttermilk. Add vanilla. Add vinegar to soda in a small cup. Lastly, fold in soda and vinegar mixture. Don't beat after this is added. Bake in 2 (8-inch) tins. Bake at 350¼F for 35 minutes.

    FROSTING; In a small saucepan, stir 3 tablespoons flour and 1 cup milk. Cook until thick, stirring constantly; cool. Cream 1 cup confectioners sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 cup butter. Blend in cooled flour and milk mixture.
