Mackinac Island Fudge

1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 dash salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups confectioners sugar Recipe
Mix milk, butter, sugars and salt in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 6 minutes, stirring all the while. Remove from heat. Add vanilla and powdered sugar. Beat with mixer until smooth and thick, about 6 minutes. Pour into buttered pan and freeze for 20 minutes. Cut into pieces. Makes a little more than a pound.
CHOCOLATE FUDGE: Follow recipe but add 1 1-oz square of chocolate to boiling mixture.
PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE: Follow recipe but cut butter to 1/4 cup and add 1/2 cup peanut butter. >>
