1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup boiling water
2/3 cup shortening
1-3/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2-1/4 cups self-rising flour
1-1/3 cups buttermilk
One-Bowl Buttercream (below)
Recipe
Preheat oven to 350�F.� Spray 2 9-inch cake pans with non-stick vegetable spray. In a small bowl, combine cocoa powder and boiling water, stirring until smooth.
In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening, butter, and vanilla until light and fluffy.� Add eggs, beating until blended.� Add flour alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.� Beat in cocoa mixture until blended.� Pour into prepared cake pans.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean.� Cool in cake pans for 10 minutes.� Remove from cake pans; cool completely on a wire rack.� Fill and frost with One-Bowl Buttercream.
ONE-BOWL BUTTERCREAM
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
2-2/3 cups confectioners� sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a medium bowl, beat butter until light and fluffy.� Add confectioners� sugar and cocoa powder alternately with milk; beat until smooth and of spreading consistency.
