    1/2 cup butter
    1 egg
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1 cup sifted powdered sugar
    1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 1/2 cups sifted flour

    Preheat oven 350ºF. Mix well shortening, butter, sugar, egg, almond & vanilla. In separate bowl, mix flour & salt & add to shortening mixture. Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into one half. Roll 1 tsp red dough & 1 tsp white dough on lightly floured board into 4" strips. Place strips side by side & press lightly together & twist like rope. Curve top of rope down to look like handle of candy cane. Bake 9 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove while still warm. Sprinkle with 1/2 c crushed peppermint stick candy & 1/2 c sugar (opt). Makes 2 dozen. Make one complete cookie at a time. If dough of 1 color is shaped first, little rolls become too dry to twist.
