    1/3 cup shortening
    1 cup packed brown sugar
    1 1/2 cups dark molasses
    2/3 cup cold water
    7 cups flour
    2 teaspoons baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon allspice
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 teaspoon ground ginger
    1/2 teaspoon water
    1 teaspoon crushed cloves
    2 egg yolks
    food colorings

    Mix shortening, brown sugar & molasses thoroughly. Stir 2/3 c water. Blend flour, soda, salt & spices; stir into molasses mixture. Chill 1 hr. Roll dough about 1/4" thick. Cut with boy & girl cookie cutters. Make egg yolk paint by blending egg yolks & 1/2 tsp water. Divide yolk among few small bowls & add food coloring to each cup for desired color. Paint clothes & decorations on cookies as desired. Carefully transfer to lightly greased baking sheet. Using toothpick, make hole in top of each cookie. Press raisins into dough for eyes, nose, mouth. Use bits of candied cherries for coat buttons & strips of citron for ties. Bake 350ºF for 10-12 minutes. Cool slightly, carefully remove from baking sheet. Makes 2 1/2 dozen . Can make holes in tops to hang on tree.
