1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
1 cup light molasses or sorghum
1/3 cup boiling water
5 cups flour
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon saltRecipe
In a large bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses, water and vinegar. Combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and salt; beat into creamed mixture. Cover and chill for 3 hours. On a lightly floured board, roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2 inch cutter or drinking glas dipped in flour. Place on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375ºF for 8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Do not overbake. Makes 6-7 dozen.
