14 medium Fully ripe pears (3 1/2 pounds total) peel core, cut up
1/2 cup sugar up To 2/3
1/4 teaspoon Almond extract or
2 tablespoons Kirsch (cherry liqueur)

Place pear pieces in a 2-quart microwave-safe casserole. Cover and microcook on 100 percent power (high) for 10 minutes or till tender, stirring once. Cool slightly; do not drain.
Combine pears, cooking liquid, sugar, and kirsch or extract in a blender container or food processor bowl. Cover and blend or process till smooth.
Freeze in a 4- to 5-quart ice-cream freezer according to manufacturer's directions. (Or, transfer to a 9x9x2-inch pan. Cover and freeze for 2 to 3 hours or till almost firm. Transfer to a chilled bowl. Beat with an electric mixer till smooth but not melted. Return to pan. Cover, freeze till firm.) If desired, garnish each serving with a strawberry.
Makes 5 cups (10 servings).
