To steam any kind of vegetable, first chop it up into whatever size you prefer. Place it in a steamer basket or a stainless-steel colander that will fit inside a pot and then fill the pot with an inch of two of water (so that it doesn't cover any of the veggies). If you don't have a steamer or colander, you can place the veggies right in the pot and then fill the pot with just 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and then simmer until the veggies are tender. Different veggies take different amounts of time -- squash, for example, takes only a minute, while broccoli takes a couple of minutes, and string beans take about 5 minutes.
