"Flavored cream cheese is as easy to make as flavored butter. And even quicker, because though you'll want to let the cream cheese warm up a bit before whipping it, you don't need to let it come to room temperature. Add whatever items you like to flavor it; here are a few of my favorites. Serve flavored cream cheese in demitasse cups or mini glass bowls with bagels, muffins, or soft pretzels."

• Pesto Cream Cheese:
Whip 8 ounces cream cheese with 1 tablespoon pesto.
• Lemon-Thyme Cream Cheese:
Whip 8 ounces cream cheese with 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest and ½ teaspoon fresh thyme leaves.
• Autumn Spice Cream Cheese:
Whip 8 ounces cream cheese with ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, â…› teaspoon ground nutmeg, and â…› teaspoon ground cloves.
