Cheesy Pretzels
Source of Recipe
From "Kids Cook!" (Betty Crocker)
List of Ingredients
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour, plus 2 Tbsp for rolling out dough (divided use)
- ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 3 Tbsp coarse salt
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 400° F. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
- Put 1½ cups flour, cheese, butter, baking powder, sugar, salt and milk in a medium bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon to make a soft dough.
- Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons flour over a clean work surface. Put dough on surface. Divide dough in half to make 2 balls. Roll each ball of dough around 3 or 4 times. Knead the dough 10 times. (Curve your fingers around it and fold the dough toward you. Push the dough away from you with the heels of your hands, using a quick rocking motion. The dough should look smooth and stretchy when you're done.)
- Divide each ball of dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a 12-inch rope. To shape each pretzel, shape the rope into a circle, overlapping rope about 2 inches from each end, leaving the ends of the rope free. Take one end in each hand; twist once where rope crosses. Lift ends over to opposite side of circle. Pinch ends to seal. Put pretzels on cookie sheet.
- Crack the egg into a small bowl. Beat egg with a fork until the yolk and white are mixed. Brush egg over pretzels, using a pastry brush. Sprinkle about ½ teaspoon coarse salt on each pretzel. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until pretzels are golden brown. Cool on a wire cooling rack for about 3 minutes before eating.
Makes 16 pretzels.
