- 3 Tbsp butter (plus a little extra for greasing pan)
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2-1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 cup toasted bread crumbs
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Butter a 9x9-inch baking dish.
- Cook macaroni in a 4-quart pot according to package directions, and keep an eye on it as you prepare the cheese sauce.
- Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Add flour and stir briefly. Add milk to the mixture and bring just to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Add 2 cups of the cheese and stir until sauce becomes thick and creamy. Add salt, pepper and garlic powder.
- When macaroni is cooked, drain, then pour into baking dish. Pour hot cheese sauce over macaroni and sprinkle bread crumbs and remaining 1/2 cup cheese over mixture. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling.
Makes 6 servings.
