Dori's Skillet Dumplings and Blackberries

Recipe Introduction
"Dori Sanders is known throughout the Carolinas not only as a peach farmer with a wildly popular farm stand near York, South Carolina, but also as an accomplished cook and cookbook author whose Southern recipes couldn't be more enticing. Over the years, Dori has come up with numerous intriguing ideas, but none is more original than these delightfully sticky fried dumplings and blackberries, which I serve warm with ice cream. Fresh blackberries, of course, are best, but partially thawed frozen ones can also be used."
List of Ingredients
â—¦ 1 cup all-purpose flour
â—¦ 1 teaspoon baking powder
â—¦ ½ teaspoon baking soda
â—¦ ½ teaspoon salt
â—¦ 1 cup plus 2 teaspoons sugar
â—¦ â…” cup buttermilk
â—¦ 1 large egg
â—¦ 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter, melted
â—¦ Pinch of grated nutmeg
â—¦ 1 quart fresh blackberries
â—¦ Vanilla ice cream
Recipe
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 2 teaspoons of the sugar and mix till well blended. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, half of the butter, and nutmeg, add to the dry ingredients, and stir till the batter is blended but still moist.
In a large, deep skillet, heat the remaining melted butter over moderately high heat, drop the batter in batches by large tablespoons into the fat, fry till the dumplings are browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side, and drain on paper towels.
Pour the blackberries into the skillet, add the remaining 1 cup sugar, stir well, and arrange the dumplings over the berries. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes. To serve, spoon equal amounts of berries into serving bowls, top with the dumplings, and serve warm with scoops of ice cream.
