Southern-Style Baked Macaroni and Cheese

- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 8 ounces grated sharp Cheddar cheese, divided
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1-1/2 tsp dry mustard
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- 2 large eggs
- 2 cups half-and-half
- 1 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Cook the macaroni according to package directions. Drain the pasta, and then rinse with cool water. Place the macaroni into a buttered 3-quart casserole dish. Mix about 2/3 cup of the grated cheese into the macaroni.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, mustard, black pepper, and cayenne. Whisk the sour cream into the dry ingredients until incorporated. Whisk in the eggs, followed by the half-and-half and cream. Pour the custard over the macaroni. Top with the remaining cheese.
- Bake the macaroni and cheese for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and browned around the edges.
