    3/4 c. butter
    1 c. caster sugar
    grated rind of 1 lemon
    5 eggs, separated
    1 c. yoghurt
    2 1/4 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    pinch of salt
    1/2 tsp. baking soda

    Syrup:
    1 c. granulated sugar
    3/4 c. cold water
    thin strip lemon rind
    1 Tbsp. lemon juice

    Oven temperature is 350 degrees.
    Cooking time is 50 to 55 minutes.

    Cream butter, lemon rind and sugar until fluffy.
    Add egg yolks separately, beating well after each addition. Blend in yoghurt.
    Sift dry ingredients, fold into creamed mixture.
    Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into batter.
    Turn into a greased and floured 8-inch tube pan.
    Bake in moderate oven for 50 to 55 minutes.

    Meanwhile, make syrup.
    Combine sugar, water in pan, stirring over medium heat until dissolved.
    Bring to boil, add lemon rind, juice and boil on medium heat, without stirring, for 10 minutes.
    Remove lemon rind and cool syrup to room temperature.
    Cool cake in tin pan for 5 minutes, then turn onto serving dish.
    Spoon cold syrup over cake, letting it seep slowly into cake.
    Serve warm, cut in thick slices with whipped cream.
