    Great Grandma's Gingerbread Cake

    2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. ground ginger
    1 tsp. ground cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. salt
    dash ground cloves
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 cup shortening
    2/3 cup molasses
    1 egg, beaten
    3/4 cup boiling water
    whipped topping

    Combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, salt and cloves, set aside. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses and egg. Mix well. Stir in the dry ingredeints alternately with water, mix well. Pour into a greased 9 inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely. Cut into squares, top witha dollap of whipped topping. Leftovers will keep several days in a n airtight container.
