General Ulysses S. Grant owned a cabin nearby and that property is owned by the Busch Family of Anheuser Busch Brewery in St. Louis...who doesn't remember the ad with the team of Clydesdale draft horses, pulling the Budweiser Wagon through the front gates amidst a snowstorm???
The farm is open to the public by reservation and features tram rides through the herds of deer and buffalo,.... exotic bird shows, a petting zoo and other entertainment. And of course a free glass of beer. For those of age...
The restaurant, Grant's Cabin ,is located a few miles away in a shopping center. The exterior is reminiscent of a log cabin..
3/4 lb. cooked corn beef
[canned or from the deli]
3/4 lb. lean cooked ham
1/2 of a [#2 1/2 ] can of sauerkraut,
[I use 1 cup]
Grind meats and sauerkraut through medium grinder...strain completely dry. Reserve juice
Sauté 1 medium onion, diced finely, in 2 Tab. bacon grease or vegetable oil until tender...
add mixture, stir and cook until tender on medium heat...
add 1 Tab. Caraway seed
scant 1 tsp. garlic powder
2 egg yolks
reserved juice
1/2 cup flour
Cook on medium low, stirring until mixture is heavy paste...chill until cold...Form 1" balls, roll in seasoned bread crumbs, and deep fry until golden brown...serve hot with a seasoned mustard, horseradish, or....spread on cocktail rye slices and brown in the oven...
