    2 empty, clean juice cans (48 oz)
    21/2 C warm water
    2 pkg. yeast (11/2 T.)
    4 T. shortening (Butter Flavor Crisco was used)
    2 t salt
    4 T sugar
    6 C flour

    Recipe



    In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add shortening, salt, sugar and 3 cups flour. Using an electric mixer, beat two minutes at medium speed or by hand for 21/2 minutes. (Frequently scrape sides and bottom.) Add remaining flour and use a spoon to mix/blend. Cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place (85 degrees F.) for 30 minutes or until double in size. Beat batter about 25 strokes and place in greased juice cans. Smooth tops and pat with a floured hand. Let rise again in cans until batter reaches 1 inch from the top. Bake 45 to 50 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove from cans, and let cool on rack. Cut when cool.
