    Emma, Best Sugar Cookies

My neighbor Emma always had some of these in the cookie jar. It was so easy to stop by for coffee, knowing I could eat some. It took a long time to get the recipe from her. There is no doubt that you will enjoy them as much as I have.

    1 cup butter, softened
    1/2 cup confectioners sugar
    3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
1 egg, lightly beaten, 1 teaspoon vanilla
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
    1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

    Preheat oven to 350 F

Mix 1/4 cup sugar with nutmeg and set aside.
In a large bowl cream butter, confectioners sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until well blended.
    Add beaten egg and vanilla.
In another bowl, whisk or sift together flour, soda and cream of tartar.
    Stir into creamed mixture
Chill about 2 hours or until dough is easy to handle.
    Shape into 3/4 inch balls.
Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Press to flatten to 1 1/2 inch with glass buttered on bottom and dipped into nutmeg- sugar for each cookie.
Sprinkle with any remaining sugar mixture on tops.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden.
    Remove to racks to cool.
