Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
3/4 cup dark brown sugar -- packed
    1/2 cup unsalted butter
    1/3 cup maple syrup
    2 eggs -- lightly beaten
    3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup bittersweet chocolate -- coarsely chopped
    -- (6 oz approximately)
2/3 cup pecans -- coarsely chopped

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Melt together the dark brown sugar, unsalted butter and maple syrup in a small, heavy saucepan set over low heat, stirring frequently until the mixture bubbles. Remove from heat; pour the mixture into a large bowl. Let stand 20 minutes or until cool. Stir in the eggs until well combined; add the vanilla.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir into the batter only until smooth. Fold in 1/2 cup chopped chocolate and 1/3 cup chopped pecans.

Spread the batter evenly into a greased 10-inch square baking pan, wax-paper-lined and greased and floured. Sprinkle the top evenly with the remaining chocolate and nuts. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cake shrinks slightly from the edges of the pan and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out barely clean (do not overbake).

Cool in pan 10 minutes. Invert onto a wire rack. Carefully peel off the waxed paper. Reinvert onto second wire rack. Cool completely before cutting and serving. Cut into 24 bars, 2-1/4 x 1-1/2 inches each.
