    Cathy and Dave Engle

    Recipe Introduction

The little old Italian ladies in Dave's neighborhood used to make these as a treat for the kids. Cathy and Dave have tried to recreate the recipe. This isn't exactly how they remember them (I think the little old ladies dumped what they had on hand and fried them), but it is close.

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 3 Tsp sugar
    • 1 pinch salt
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 cup milk
    • 2 TBS butter, melted
    • vegetable oil for frying
    • sugar for sprinkling on top

    Instructions

    1. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, salt and sugar. Add the egg, butter and vanilla. Stir in milk, 1 TBS at a time until the dough is workable and smooth. Chill in freezer about 30 minutes.
    2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/4" thickness. Cut into strips and twist each strip.
    3. Heat oil to 375 (medium high). Deep fry each twist for about 2 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on a brown paper bag and roll in sugar while still warm.
