I changed a few things in the directions - they call for dyed coconut for the hair, but I like the idea of piping on frosting instead. These are really cute and easy to do. They would be a good project for kids. I had to store them in the refrigerator to keep the frosting 'gluey' and next year, if I make these again, I'll try Royal icing and see if that works better.
1/2 can vanilla frosting, divided
36 miniature semisweet chocolate chips
12 large marshmallows
Green, red and yellow food coloring
24 chocolate wafers
12 miniature peanut butter cups
12 milk chocolate kisses
Recipe
Divide the frosting for dyeing (you'll need the most to be orange, a bit of green and a smaller amount untinted). Dye with food coloring and put in pastry bags fitted with tips. Put the orange in the bag with the smallest star tip and the green and untinted in bags with plain round tips.
For hats, pipe some of the untinted frosting in the center of each of 12 of the chocolate wafers; press peanut butter cups upside down into frosting. Pipe a bit of the untinted frosting on the bottoms of chocolate kisses; place on peanut butter cups. Cut a small hole in the corner of pastry or plastic bag; insert a small star tip. Fill the bag with frosting and pipe stars around the base of each peanut butter cup. Refrigerate.
For the face of each witch, place a bit of untinted frosting on the bottom of three chocolate chips; press two for eyes and one for nose onto each marshmallow. Using a toothpick and red food coloring, draw a mouth on the face. Pipe green frosting on for hair. Pipe some of the untinted frosting in the center of each of the remaining 12 chocolate wafers and place a marshmallow in the center of each one. Refrigerate.
When both hats and witch faces are firm, pipe a dab of untinted frosting on top of the witch head and press the hat onto the head. Refrigerate.
