I made these adorable cookies for Easter 2012. They were very easy to make and everyone exclaimed over how cute they were. The colors that I used: pink, yellow, blue, purple and green. There is a trick to forming them to get a nice swirl of color: once you have formed the ‘snake’ and are coiling it up, you need to roll the long part slightly away from you the entire time you are coiling. I used both rainbow and white nonpareils and liked both. The only problem that I had was that in the picture on the website, the coils are very separate and defined. My cookies flattened out much more. The next time that I try them, I’ll put the cooky sheet in the fridge for a few minutes before baking.
1 17.5-oz. bag Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix, mixed according to package directions
(or your favorite sugar cookie dough recipe)
Liquid food coloring, as desired (McCormick Neon shades work well)
Rainbow nonpareils, if desired
Recipe
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Divide the dough into 5 bowls (a scale works well here). Color each portion with food coloring. Roll each color into grape-sized balls. Using a ball of each color, form a ball (looks like a beach ball at this point). Roll each larger ball into a 12-inch long ‘snake’. Starting at one end, coil the dough (twisting the end of the ‘snake’ as you go) into a round. Roll the edges in the nonpareils and place on cooky sheet. Bake for 10-11 minutes.
