    Hot French Cheese Sandwiches

    Source of Recipe

    Recipe Introduction

I haven’t the slightest idea what makes these “French”, but they ARE really good. They are somewhere in between grilled cheese and cheese toast. I had some pretty ordinary Cheddar cheese and Texas toast bread and so used them. The sandwiches were STILL wonderful. I’d love to try them again with different cheeses and some really good bread – maybe sourdough? I halved the recipe and had enough cheese for 3, not 4 sandwiches. So, the whole recipe may NOT make 8 sandwiches as claimed.

    List of Ingredients

2c (8oz) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
    1/2 c butter, softened
    2 eggs
    1/4 t. garlic powder
    1/4 t. onion powder
16 slices white or rye sandwich bread
    Paprika

    Recipe

Heat oven to 400F. Using a mixer combine the first five ingredients. Beat on medium until fairly smooth. Spread about 1 T. cheese mixture on the top of 8 bread slices [see my note above]. Top with the other 8 slices of bread and spread the remaining cheese evenly on each of the sandwiches. Sprinkle with paprika and bake for 10-12 minutes.

Makes 8 sandwiches [see my note above].
