Just a good, catsup-based sweet BBQ sauce. Very simple to make. It is no better or worse than what it is copying, but good for when you’d like to be able to say you made it from scratch! I didn’t bother with the cornstarch slurry – I found it plenty thick once it cooked down a bit.
1 1/4 cups ketchup, preferably organic
1 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup pineapple juice (or you can sub apple cider vinegar)
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worchestershire sauce
2 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4-1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (use less if you don't like the heat)
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/8 cold water mixed with 1 tablespoon corn starch (optional)
Recipe
Mix all the ingredients except for the ones in the last line in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 5 minutes – the sugar needs to dissolve. If you wish, add the cornstarch slurry and simmer a little bit longer. Watch carefully – it will thicken quickly. Store in the fridge.
