Quickbread, Fruity Sandwich Loaf

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
1/2 cup dates, finely cut
1/2 cup dried apricots, finely cut (optional)
Recipe
Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into mixing bowl. Cut in Shortening until mixture is as fine as meal. Add egg, milk, orange juice, orange rind, nuts, and fruits and beat 200 strokes. Bake in greased loaf pan, 9 x 5 x 3 inch, in moderate oven (350 degrees F.) about 1 1/4 hours. Excellent for sandwiches; also delicious sliced and toasted.
